Ever since the Dawn of Mankind, people have pursued the golden dream of eternal youth, hoping to avoid the "mysterious forces" of old age and prevent its "evil" consequences. Today, thanks to the advance of molecular science, we are on the verge of finally solving this profound mystery, for an increasing number of anti-aging studies presently ratify the intricate relation between the unwanted effects of old age and a set of tiny molecules and atoms with unpaired electrons, known as "free radicals".

Free radicals are produced by our normal bodily processes and also obtained from external sources (processed foods, chemicals, drugs, pollution, preservatives, pesticides, trans and hydrogenated fats, etc.). Scientists describe them as unstable and highly reactive particles that interrelate with molecules in the body, setting off "propagation reactions" that turn these molecules into new free radicals.

Most of today's anti-Aging therapies revolve around the fact that levels of free radicals increase in old age, damaging the cell's mitochondria and triggering the ulterior decay and death of the cell or group of cells, which consequently brings health problems and organic decay associated with old age. Studies have proven that boosting the defenses of the mitochondria with antioxidants produces "termination reactions" that prevent or reduce this damage.

According to the Department of Chemistry of the University of York, "research has revealed that free radicals are present in the atmosphere, in our bodies and in some very important chemical reactions. Indeed, free radicals have an impact on all of our lives... Whereas propagation reactions have one radical reactant and one radical product, termination reactions lead to the destruction of free radicals (i.e. no new radicals are produced from these reactions)."

Investigators from the University of Florida, University of Wisconsin and three other institutions, recently studied the effect of oxidative damage and antioxidants in cells. On December, 2009, they announced that they found that oxidation indeed weakens the mitochondria membrane, thus allowing harmful proteins to move into the rest of the cell. They concluded that this may be prevented with antioxidant therapies or by regularly ingesting antioxidant foods and natural antioxidant supplements.

Another recent anti-aging research by the University of Pittsburgh studied 2,000 men and women over 70 for a period of two years. Also on December, 2009, they announced that there is a "significant" link between the intake of antioxidants such as vitamins C and E, and an increase in muscle strength, regardless of initial strength levels.

Luckily, our bodies have natural antioxidants that neutralize free radicals. But, even though the body may naturally deal with a number of free radicals, if their level exceeds our body's capacity to neutralize them, disease and decay are bound to follow. And, as contemporary research has shown, the only solution to this problem is the regular ingestion of antioxidant foods and natural antioxidant supplements.

Indeed, scientific studies have proven that although our body produces many antioxidants like glutathione, Co-Enzyme Q10, superoxide dismutase and glutathione peroxidise, it needs an extra hand.
