Have an unrealized dream of starting a business but are a little scared because of the economy? Well, not everyone is affected by the current financial crisis.
There are companies both large and small that are thriving in this economy. Mary Kay Cosmetics Consultants and owners of specialty cupcake shops are among the many that actually reporting that business is booming. Even major corporations like Cinemark (movie theater exhibitor) and McDonald's are reporting an increase in sales. I think the common themes are simple pleasures and affordability. Even in bad times people want to feel good and treat themselves to something enjoyable.
So what does that mean for you? Should you go for it? Well, I think that you should do your homework and look into the possibility of starting up your business. Decide what you want to sell and find out why you want to sell it. Explore your ideals and do not make the mistake of doubting yourself and talking yourself out of going into business before you get started. I have learned that you can sell anything after I saw a news report about a guy who made $1 million dollars selling pet rocks.
This is where market research is critical. It is important for you to identify your target market and understand their buying habits. Collect information about their age, income, needs, where they shop and what they read. This is important so do not skip over it, which is something that many aspiring business owners do, which costs them in the long run.
After you do your homework, develop your business plan. It does not have to be the size of a best-selling novel but it needs to include important items like:
1. Name of Business
2. Type of Business
3. Location
4. Target Market
5. Product or service information
6. Competitor Information
7. Organizational Structure
8. Start Up Budget
9. Marketing Plan
Finally, believe in yourself, develop your vision, and go for it!
